Schools in the northern part of Nigeria have become frequent targets for weapon-wielding factions

Gun-wielding individuals have killed a teacher and seized a minimum of 25 learners in an attack on a female high school in north-western Nigeria, police reports indicate.

The gang of attackers stormed the comprehensive secondary school for girls in Maga, Kebbi State at around 4 AM local time on Monday, police confirmed.

The attackers "engaged police personnel on duty in a firefight" before breaching the school's outer barrier and seizing the students from their hostel, according to a statement.

One member of staff was fatally shot while defending the students. A second sustained gunshot wounds and is now being treated medically.

Witnesses reported a considerable contingent of armed individuals, referred to locally as criminal elements, who came shooting randomly to create fear.

Community members disclosed to media that the gunmen subsequently marched a number of girls into nearby bushland.

The police said they had deployed "additional police tactical units, together with army members and community security teams" to the area.

A coordinated search and rescue operation is currently ongoing in nearby woodlands and believed flight corridors.
